Many would say that modern Deicide's sound is itself a particularly bad version of nu-metal, but that didn't stop the band's frontman Glen Benton from attacking the genre as "effeminate" and "f-ggy" in a recent interview with MetalZone.
Benton has over the years been in conflict with a large number of musicians. Starting with Deicide founding members Brian and Eric Hoffman, he has also feuded intensely with his drummer Steve Asheim and various death metal musicians, as well as Euronymous himself. Even freaking Euronymous, lol.
Aside from being voted twice as having the "worst vocals in death metal", second only to Chris Barnes' 5 times, the only way Benton maintains controversy is through his "edgy" interviews with music journalists.
Glen Benton Rails Against "H-mos" Invading Metal
In a recent podcast with MetalZone, he went off against... the nu-metal band Slipknot.
Not to fucking bust balls, but I’ll bust balls. Slipknot: ‘Oh we’re going to take you guys out man, we’re going to take you guys out dude.’ Yeah blow me. That’s what I say to you. Fucking blow me Corey Taylor and all you Slipknot f-gs. OK. ‘Oh we’re going to take Deicide out on tour with us and blah blah blah.’ Blowing air up our asses, back in the day You know what, you never did a fucking thing for us. You introduced us at a show once. Great thanks. How about a fucking tour? How about fucking helping us out a little bit? I mean we’ve only been doing this for several years. You guys were like ‘Dude you were what got me started.’ Well you know what, return the fucking favor. You know what I mean?
He then began a rant on "homosexuals" in the metal scene, calling "Lord Ahriman" of Dark Funeral infamy, a "C-M F-RTER" (in reference to his sexual identity). Ahriman himself is a rather disliked person in the underground metal scene. He is mostly known for running the derivative and mediocre mallcore band Dark Funeral.
It's not the first time Benton went on a hate-filled, homophobic tirade. According to several band members, Glen Benton once loudly proclaimed "TURN THAT F-G OFF!!" when he heard Gorgoroth on the radio, and even asked a sound musician to kick Vital Remains guitarist Dave Suzuki off of a set in Toronto.
Are Deicide and Slipknot both nu-metal?
At this point, the question we should be asking is: are Slipknot and Deicide just two heads of the same coin? Two bands that embrace superficial death metal aesthetics, but whose actual musical output is closer to nu-metal and rap/rock nonsense?
In the book "The Death Metal Bible", there is an entire chapter on "core" bands who want an "edgier" image, and thus begin to add more superficial death metal elements to their music, adjusting their image to appear more "masculine"... hence, the birth of deathcore and "slam death metal".
This is certainly what modern Deicide appears to represent. A band full of vapidity, with zero creative direction, whose only "trick" to remain relevant lies in giving carefully timed "edgy" interviews to the press. Contrast that attitude with a serious death metal band like Morbid, it's night and day.
