Black Metal Music

What is Black Metal Music

Black metal arose almost simultaneously with death metal, albeit slightly later, and shares many of the same goals with that genre, notably a rejection of rock music's codes and morals and a return to the romantic period of classical music, which saw art as a means to an end, and not the end itself.

Likewise, and diametrically opposed to rock, black metal music seeks to be a means to transport and "entrance" the listener with dark atmospheres that lead him to another state of consciousness. Varg Vikernes of Burzum describes his music as a "spell" meant to transport the listener to other realms.

Black metal added narrative structure based on atmosphere and melody to death metal's primal brutality and emphasis on chromatic phrasing. Thematically, black metal represents an assault on the mores and values of modern society, namely its egalitarian individualism and moral universalism.
