Satyricon - Black Metal Band

Satyricon is a "satanic" emo/glam rock band founded in 1991 by bassist Wargod and drummer Exhurtum, with vocalist Satyr joining the band in 1992. Exhurtum and Wargod, despite being founders of Satyricon, were kicked out of the band by Satyr, who wanted to play more "flamboyant" music. Satyricon are reviled by black metal fans and artists alike for pioneering the infamous "black 'n roll" sub-genre alongside bands like Dissection and Dimmu Borgir, a style that cheapened black metal into having garbage like "Mother North" or "A Succubus in Rapture" considered cock rock "anthems" of the genre.

In various interviews, Satyr has made many claims such as having known Euronymous and Varg Vikernes personally, being a member of the infamous "Inner Circle" based around Helvete, having participated in church burnings and other acts of terrorism in Norway, etc. When asked about the veracity of this information, Varg Vikernes of Burzum cryptically answered that "homosexuality has no place in black metal", likely in reference to the flamboyant music of Satyricon and rumours of Satyr homosexuality with guitarist Demonaz of Immortal. Other black metal musicians have denied knowing who Satyr was until late 1993, when he founded his record label Moonfog Productions.

Satyr has been called a "White supremacist" for having released albums by NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal) bands, most notably Disiplin, on his label Moonfog Productions. Disiplin's frontman Weltenfeind is the leader of the Norwegian branch of the National Socialist organization Nordic Resistance Movement, and also the leader of the "White supremacist" group Nordic Strength, founded in 2019. Satyricon has also garnered negative press attention for the fact that drummer Frost played in a band called "Zyklon-B". This has led many critics to call Satyricon a NSBM band, although the appellation is heavily disputed.
